King St is good for downtown & for business

With recent news that Councillor Hillier is advocating for the removal of the new King St protected bike lane, we wanted to share some important points about why we need more protected bike lanes in London not less:

  1. We’re in a climate emergency – cars are the #1 emitter of greenhouse gas in London emitting 55% of our total household emissions. If we’re serious about protecting our Earth, we need less cars which means improving alternatives such as cycling, walking and transit.

  2. We need safer streets – we’ve already had 40 collisions reported to police between drivers and people on bikes this year. One resulted in death. Another person is in the hospital in critical condition. Physically protecting people on bikes from vehicles is paramount to ensuring we make our streets safer for everyone. Did you know that bike lanes make the street safer for pedestrians and drivers as well?

  3. Protected bike lanes increase the number of people on bikes – the City used 55 cyclists a day as their baseline on King and we’ve counted 54 in an hour with the new configuration.

  4. We want a city and downtown that’s people-focused – we are social creatures drawn to nice places that are comfortable to walk in and where we can see other people. This is why Dundas Place is so great, why it is fun to be downtown when there are events on and why downtown offers an experience very different from suburban big box stores. Bike lanes support people-focused places, while more traffic detracts from it.

The complaint from Councillor Hillier is that parking is harder to find and therefore businesses will close down. We affirm that having nearby parking is vital to businesses and that the introduction of the King St bike lane has made it slightly harder to find parking.  In the City’s most recent parking count, peak parking demand downtown was only 71% of the available 15,000 spaces and only 54% of on-street parking spaces. King Street still has on-street parking full-time throughout the day compared to Richmond Row, which only allows on-street parking from 10am-3pm and after 6pm. Richmond Row continues to succeed!

In fact, numerous studies show converting road space from cars to people on bikes has either a positive or a negligible effect on sales and revenues.

What can you do?

  1. Ride your bike using King and Colborne as much as you can and post a selfie with the tags #wewantmorebikelanes #kingstbikelane #ldnontbike.

  2. email your councilor (see list below) letting them know that you want the King Street bike lane to remain and to build more bike lanes like King. Feel free to copy and paste this blog post or share the link.

  3. Also, support the local businesses along King and let them know you support the bike lane

Lessons Learned from Bikes on Dundas

On Tuesday, March 5th, London City Council voted almost unanimously to endorse the staff recommendation for protected bike lanes on Dundas between downtown and Old East Village with a hybrid/couplet model through the heart of Old East (westbound on Queens and eastbound on Dundas).

Although the hybrid portion is not the best solution, the protected bike lane as a whole represents a giant leap forward for attracting more people on bikes, for improving perceived and actual safety, and for creating a more vibrant Old East Village and Downtown.

There are many things we can learn from the process and decision that can inform our future work:

  1. Advocacy works - This may seem counterintuitive since we didn’t get the full solution we wanted, but if we look back to the first public meeting, many business owners didn’t want bike lanes on Dundas at all. Having us present and vocal at the public meetings to declare the importance of locating good cycling infrastructure close to retail and cultural destinations gave city staff the support they needed to make it a reality.

  2. Building positive relationships early on is critical - Since the precise solution we advocated for was only detailed after both public meetings had been held, it was harder to garner support from the local city councillor and BIA. Having as many businesses, councillors, and community leaders as possible in support before it comes to a council decision will give us a much better chance of success.

  3. Communicate clear messaging and factual information widely - Misinformation or confusion around what is being proposed is likely; the status quo is always the easiest path forward because it is known and accepted. It’s up to us as advocates to communicate the benefits, illustrate the vision, demonstrate how it will affect stakeholders, and synthesize it all into a cohesive message.

  4. We need a team of people to strategize and support the advocacy process - Advocacy is dynamic and strategizing in real-time is important. We need many voices to make good decisions and be heard. The community of people supporting Bikes on Dundas could be a great start for a member-based advocacy team for future projects.

  5. We have support - There are many people in London who want to see better infrastructure for people on bikes. Through the Bikes on Dundas process we heard support for our advocacy from citizens, business owners, politicians and other community organizations. Let’s amplify those voices!

Although Council has made their decision, and that is more or less final, there is still much work to be done to ensure the project achieves its goals of attracting more people to cycle and improve safety. Here are a few things we need to do in the coming months:

  1. Count the number of cyclists on Queens, Dundas, and King this spring/ summer so we have a baseline to compare to. This will help document the progress that is made.

  2. Create a wish list of any improvements we feel are necessary to city staff’s design and advocate for these.

  3. Ensure  an increased cycling budget for the infrastructure that’s not on Dundas between Adelaide and Ontario (covered by a full road reconstruction project). Early estimates from staff were in the $2 million range, which would be the equivalent of 3 years of the current cycling budget.

  4. Partner with local businesses to help them understand the needs and wants of cyclists and ask how people on bikes can support them (buy more!).

This was a great project for London Cycle Link to undertake, and it was by no means a loss. Changing London from a car-centric city to one that accepts and supports cycling as a viable alternative is difficult and important work.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Bikes on Dundas so far.  We look forward to following this project through to its best end, and to using what we’ve learned in this process to work towards better, safer, smarter cycling infrastructure as we ride on!

King Street cycle track good for business

In response to the Free Press article, Downtown merchants raise concerns over King Street cycle lanes, below is a brief summary of some of the benefits of the upcoming King Street cycle tracks on business:

Downtown has seen many changes in how people get around in recent years. Construction has displaced typical commutes, city buses moved permanently to King and Queens, and the new Fanshawe campus and residential developments have all affected getting around downtown. We can understand why you may feel uncertain about another change this spring to add cycle tracks to King Street.

To ease your worries, experience from other cities has shown bike lanes are good for business. Bloor Street in Toronto saw an increase in sales of 4.5% in the first year after protected bike lanes were installed[1]. Businesses in Calgary and Vancouver have cited an influx of new customers[2]. And a study in Portland[3] revealed that cyclists spent more per month than their driving counterparts. All this leads to good news for business.

Additionally, making it safe for people to cycle on King will dramatically increase the number of people who choose to bike. Laurier Avenue in Ottawa saw an increase of 330% over 5 years with cycle tracks[4]. More people cycling will free up road space, lead to a safer and more vibrant King Street for all users, and make our air cleaner.

The installation of cycle tracks on King Street this spring will be a game-changer for people on bikes, will offer additional waiting space for transit users, and will produce a more vibrant street. We cannot guarantee the future, but cycle tracks on King should be a very good thing for your business.
