My Experience as a Bike Mechanic

By Lexy Majocha:

Looking back to when I first started working at Squeaky Wheel, I have gained so much experience and connection within the biking community. I had very little knowledge of bikes and the two-wheel community, and hadn’t biked in over a year. Honestly, I was drawn to the job more out of the idea of learning about mechanics as I have a passion for robotics and team work. I gained more than I could ever have imagined.

After a few weeks at Squeaky Wheel, Jesse, a volunteer, offered to give me a KHS Town and Country bike he had found so I could work on my new toy and make it my own.  It also enabled me to commute to work. From the initial gift of that red shiny bike and the kindness of new friends, I quickly became hooked to my new community. With help from Wyatt and Dan, I had fixed up my shiny bike marking the beginning of my new found love for all things bike.

As I got to know the regulars at SW I got to experience the friendly atmosphere of the shop while learning with other members, and even sharing with newcomers and my friends my new found skills and passion around all things bike.

I recently bought my first road bike, a vintage neon pink and yellow Concorde Colombo. This bike is more than just a purchase for me. Getting a road bike opens a new world of adventure, passion, and pushing limits alongside my friends and family.
