About the Organization 

Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op is a DIY community bike shop providing Londoners with an accessible environment where they can learn about bicycle maintenance and cycling as a safe and sustainable means of transportation. We seek to be a hub and source of support connecting all Londoners with the resources they need to become confident, competent cyclists. 

Squeaky Wheel is a project of London Cycle Link, a non-profit helping more Londoners ride more often. We engage in education, advocacy and community-building through our events, campaigns and community bike shop. 

About the Position 

London Cycle Link is hiring a Shop Manager to run the Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op, and to lead staff and volunteers in defining and growing the shop. Through training, leadership, shop sales, and hands-on DIY bicycle repair, the Shop Manager will foster an empowering environment where bikes are fixed and barriers are broken. Please note: Squeaky Wheel will be moving to a new location this summer, and there is an opportunity for the Shop Manager to influence and guide the transition to our new space. 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Maintain Squeaky Wheel Bike Co-op as a safe, professional, fun and inclusive working environment for customers, members, volunteers and staff

  • Assess and repair bicycles, ensuring repairs are completed to a high standard

  • Provide excellent customer service—greeting people as they come into the space, answering calls and emails, resolving complaints or issues 

  • Price inventory and use point-of-sale system to sell used bikes, parts, merchandise and memberships 

  • Manage new and used parts inventory and keep work stations stocked with appropriate tools 

  • Do basic shop tasks such as daily maintenance, cleaning, and organizing 

  • Hire and train junior staff and volunteers, and provide ongoing guidance 

  • Work with the Squeaky Wheel committee to create meaningful volunteer duties 

  • Develop, run and/or support the shop’s programs: volunteer nights, women/trans/femme repair nights, educational programs for students including newcomer youth, and public workshops

  • Support London Cycle Link’s programming and outreach initiatives

  • Capture and share photos/videos/stories on social media

Qualifications

  • Intermediate to advanced bike mechanic skills 

  • Enjoy working with people from all walks of life, all backgrounds, and all ability levels

  • Strong professional and interpersonal communication skills 

  • Excellent organizational skills, including project management 

  • Ability to work both independently and with a team 

Assets 

  • Knowledge of/interest in cycling culture and cycling advocacy 

  • Comfort with teaching groups and individuals 

  • Experience with retail bike shops, either as a volunteer or staff member 

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to anti-oppressive values and practices

  • Digital communication skills including social media, websites, and photography 

  • Experience working for or volunteering with a non-profit organization 

Job Specifications 

  • Compensation: $20/hour

  • Hours: 20-30 hours/week depending on availability and interests; some seasonal variation 

  • Position start date: April 23, or as soon as possible

  • Direct report: Molly Miksa, Executive Director
